Abstract
American farms and ranches are providing temporary retreat from cities by offering overnight vacation opportunities. Mail questionnaires and field interviews were used to collect data on 257 rural recreation operators and 597 rural vacation families. Farm and ranch vacationers resided predominantly in metropolitan areas and stayed in a few nationally known recreation spots. Proximity, familiarity with dude ranches and vacation farms, and the appeal of the cowboy and farm cultures accounted for the magnitude and direction of vacation flows. Vacationers were affluent and highly educated families whose children constituted the major reason for initially vacationing on farms and ranches. The sources of information and reasons for selecting rural vacations are discussed. Rural people and their work attracted vacationers more than traditional recreational activities. Keywords
