Abstract
Effects of thyroxine and some analogues of thyroxine on the O2 uptake of a rat heart homogenate system were studied. Alterations in the side chain of the thyroxine molecule did not impair the stimulatory action of the compound on O2 consumption. Removal of I atoms on the 3,5 positions of the diphenyl ether structure of the thyroxine molecule resulted in diminished capacity of the compound to accelerate O2 utilization. D-thyroxine and d-triiodothyronine exhibited practically as much activity as their levo isomers. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine did not augment appreciably the O2 uptake of rat heart mitochondria.
