Rat Alpha 1 Fetoprotein. IV. Effect of Growth and Surgical Removal of Morris Hepatoma 7777 on the Serum α1 F Concentration of Buffalo Rats 2

Abstract
The serum α1F concentrations of Buffalo rats with transplanted Morris hepatoma 7777 rose sharply within a few days after transplantation from below the upper limit of normal of 0.06 µg/ml to as high as 10,000 µg/ml before death. The onset of increase was related to the number of viable hepatoma cells transplanted. The serum α1F concentration decreased precipitously after amputation of the inoculated tumor. However, after 1 or 2 weeks, rapid elevation was again observed if the rat developed metastatic hepatoma. The presence of metastases after surgery could be predicted by a rising serum a1F concentration as early as 30 days before their detection by examination of the animal.
