MECHANISM OF VAGAL CARDIAC SLOWING FOLLOWING INTRAVENOUS INJECTION OF SMALL VOLUMES OF STRONGLY HYPERTONIC SOLUTIONS

Abstract
The profound vagal bradycardia which follows the intraven. injn. of small vols. of strongly hypertonic solns. in nembutalized or decerebrated cats does not result from direct stimulation of the medullary vagus center, but is reflex in origin. The receptors excited are located, at least in part, within the heart itself, and the vagus nerves constitute both the afferent and efferent paths of the reflex arc.
