SPINAL CORD COMPRESSION DUE TO EXTRAMEDULLARY HEMATOPOIESIS

Abstract
A 60-year-old male was presumed to have subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord as a complication of myelophthisic anemia. Although the latter diagnosis was confirmed, surgical exploration (following myelography which indicated a block at the 8th thoracic level) revealed the cause of his neurological symptoms to be compression of the spinal cord by extra-medullary hematopoietic tissue lying within the vertebral canal on the external surface of the dura.
