A 32-bit microprocessor with virtual memory support

Abstract
A 32-bit microprocessor which supports demand paged virtual memory is described. The processor is implemented on a 290 mil/SUP 2/ chip containing approximately 60K transistors with a 3.5 /spl mu/m gate NMOS technology. The effect of software architecture and performance requirements on chip design is discussed, with particular emphasis on the special problems of supporting virtual memory. The methodology used to develop and verify the design is also discussed.
