Abstract
A landslide that occurred in the upper Acheron River valley (S74) has been radiocarbon dated (NZ547) at 500 ± 69 years b.p. There is evidence that it was initiated by an earthquake caused by movement on the Porters Pass Fault. It is suggested that earthquakes have probably caused instability of hillsides in the area. Keywords
