Tests of 4,6-Dinitro-o-Cresol Emulsion Against Overwintering Codling Moth Larvae

Abstract
Orchard tests of 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol 4 lbs., stove oil 10 gals., Na lauryl sulfate 4 lbs., and a penetrant consisting of ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether 1.5 gals., and trichloroethylene 1.5 gals, per 100 gals, applied as a dormant spray to the rough bark of trunks and scaffold limbs of large apple trees in 2 orchards, killed 94% of overwintering codling moth (Carpocapsa pomonella) larvae. In another orchard, where the trees were larger and were sprayed in the wind and followed immediately by a dormant lime sulfur spray, this formula killed only 86%; and a revision of it killed 80%. The latter consisted of dinitro-o-cresol 3 lbs., stove oil 15 gals., Na lauryl sulfate
