Classification of Optical Auroral Pulsations

Abstract
A classification scheme is proposed for optical auroral pulsations based on their occurrence with respect to the progressive phases of the auroral display together with their physical properties. The application of such a schedule to existing pulsation reports reveals a preponderance of observations of recovery phase pulsating arcs, bands, and patches obtained near the equatorward side of the auroral oval, and indicates a need for more complete observations at other latitudes and during other display phases. A greater usage of image recording techniques would also be of benefit in clarifying the role of temporal and spatial variations in auroral dynamics.
