Toxicity of γ-Benzene Hexachloride in Clothing

Abstract
The toxicity of 40% acetone solns. of 7-benzene hexachloride (GBH) as a pure isomer and of a mixture containing 83% Y-isomer was detd. by application to animals clipped or depilated. Bleached herringbone twill clothes were impregnated with the 83% y isomer of such strength as to give a cone, of 2 gm. of y isomer/sq. ft. of cloth. The cloths were fitted to animals previously clipped. The covered area per unit body wt. corresponded to that for a man in a suit. The animals showed weakness, sometimes flaccid paralysis, and finally fatal convulsions. Rabbits were most and guinea pigs least sensitive. GBH loss was 17% after 1 wearing, 23% after 2, and 36% after 3 launderings and no wearings. Control expts. were carried out which ruled out inhalation as a possible route of intoxication.
