EFFECTS OF ORGANIC MULCHES ON SOIL CONDITIONS AND SOYBEAN YIELDS

Abstract
Organic as well as inorganic mulches increased soybean yields on Carrington loam near Lafayette, Indiana. All mulches decreased the summer temps, of the surface soils, especially the peak temp. Mulching resulted in an avg. of 3% more available soil moisture compared to unmulched soils. Only minor chemical soil changes resulted from mulching. It is concluded that mulches increased soybean yields through the conservation of water. There was no pronounced difference between the effects of organic and inorganic mulches.
