Television applications of PLZT ceramics

Abstract
This paper describes applications of PLZT ferroelectric ceramic devices to television systems, including usage as variable neutral density filters, selective spectral filters, and as light gates in a system for stereoscopic television viewing. The stereoscopic system describes the use of PLZT light gates to permit stereo viewing over a wide angle with minimal interference to normal vision. Low power switching circuitry has been developed to permit extended operation with a battery power source. Principles of operation, together with block diagrams, are included. In addition, a ruggedized bonded holder assembly which permits encapsulating the PLZT element in a transparent elastomer is described. This technique increases the allowable operating potential, and provides mechanical protection.
