Abstract
The characters of Hippothoa Lamouroux are briefly discussed. Descriptions are given of H. divaricata Lamouroux (type species of Hippothoa), H. flagellum Manzoni, H. trigemma sp.n., H. gigerium sp.n., H. delta sp.n., H. tongima sp.n., H. hyalina (L.), and H. bathamae sp.n. Attention is drawn to important diagnostic characters hitherto overlooked or largely ignored, including the orifice, the form and disposition of the pore-chambers (which influence branching pattern), zooeciules, the ancestrula, early astogeny, and the presence or absence of a gizzard. All the species except H. gigerium occur in New Zealand, while that species, H. divaricata, H. flagellum and H. hyalina are present around the British Isles. Notes on biology are given where possible, and the status of described varieties and related species is considered. This publication has 27 references indexed in Scilit:
