Abstract
Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens includes Gram-negative, nonsporeforming, monotrichous organisms that produce succinic. acetic and formic acids in a rumen fluid-glucose medium. It ferments glucose, D-xylose, L-arabinose, maltose, galactose, fructose, sucrose, mannitol, dextrin and pectin. The chief variations noted in characteristics of 7 strains were in the fermentation by 2 strains of additional carbohydrates and the failure of 3 strains to ferment L-arabinose, fructose, sucrose or mannitol. Numbers of this species found in rumen of cows on different rations and physiological characteristics indicate its role in the fermentation of products of starch hydrolysis in the rumen. Lachnospira multiparus is a weakly Gram-positive, nonsporeforming, monotrichous bacterium that produces chiefly CO2, H2, ethanol, and lactic, acetic and formic acids in rumen fluid-glucose medium. Glucose, fructose, D-xylose, cellobiose, sucrose, salicin, esculin, and pectin are fermented. This organism produces a characteristic filamentous colony which is unique among predominant bacterial colonies cultured from the rumen of adult cattle. Keywords
