The Effects of Text Readability and Summary Exercises on Parental Knowledge of Behaviour Therapy: the Portage parent readings

Abstract
An experimental study of the effects of text readability and presence or absence of summary exercises on parental knowledge of behaviour therapy is reported using four chapters of the Portage parent readings. Increasing text readability by the Flesch formula leads to a significant increase in parental knowledge of behaviour therapy as measured by the knowledge of behaviour principles applied to children. There was no effect of summaries. A modest correlation of parental socio‐economic class and parental knowledge was found. The implications for the future design of instructional texts in behaviour therapy are discussed.Keywords
