Abstract
Herring catches taken by Irish vessels off the Irish west coast for the last 80 years are probably reasonable indices of herring abundance in the area. The catches, which varied by two orders of magnitude, displayed a secular trend with superimposed short-term fluctuations. The secular trend appeared to be inversely related to climatic amelioration. The short-term fluctuations, dominated by a 10-year cycle, were related to sea-surface temperature and salinity anomalies 3–4 years earlier, with winter temperature and salinity anomalies showing the strongest association. Oceanographic variation associated with the temperature and salinity fluctuations appears to affect these autumn-spawning herring in their first year of life, probably during the winter larval drift. Keywords
