Chemical Weed Control in Bodie Bean in Trinidad

Abstract
Six replicated field trials were conducted in order to select herbicides for effective weed control in the bush type cultivar Los Banos Bush Sitao No. 1 of the bodie bean or cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp). This cultivar has been recently introduced into Trinidad and has shown considerable potential for both fresh marketing and processing. The trials were carried out during 1975–1977 on River Estate loam. Chloramben gave satisfactory control up to 4 weeks when applied at 2 kg a.i./ha pre-emergence. Diphenamid at 1 kg a.i./ha plus chlorthal-dimethyl at 1 kg a.i./ha also applied pre-emergence gave acceptable yields and good weed control up to 7 weeks. Butralin at 2 and 4 kg a.i./ha gave good yields and excellent weed control up to 7 weeks when applied pre-emergence but was less effective when applied preplanting. None of the herbicide treatments caused any apparent damage to the crop.
