Abstract
Criminal justice departments in higher education should take care that they critically evaluate today's justice agencies. What is suggested is the development, primarily in academic structures, of a subdiscipline, "critical theory," to stand midway between the lofty analysis of social ideals (social philosophy) and the exposure of the inefficiencies of particular justice institutions (social criti cism). Keywords
