EFFECTS OF INJECTION OF EXTRACT OF YEAST ON GASTRIC SECRETION IN DOGS

Abstract
6 dogs with gastric fistulas were injected intramusc. with extract made from yeast by the method of Keeton and Koch for "gastrin" in animal tissues. Consistent increases in vol. and acid of gastric juice occurred when 3 cc. (equivalent to 30 g. of fresh yeast) of extract were injected. The maximum effect was reached in the first 30 mins. after inj., and stimulation was maintained for at least 60 min. The gastric response resembled that following inj. of 0.1 mg. of histamine into the same dogs. From preliminary but not conclusive tests it is probable that histamine is not the active agent of the yeast extract. Control injs. of 0.9% NaCl or of 4.5 mg. of thiamine chloride had no effect.
