Abstract
Primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachments [200 in humans] repaired with Silastic sponge implants were evaluated. A primary reattachment rate of 94% and an overall reattachment rate of 95% were achieved. Of the successful repairs, 2 became detached after 6 mo., giving a redetachment rate of .apprx. 1%. Of the 12 failures, 8 were due to massive periretinal proliferation (MPP) (overall incidence of MPP was 4%). To date only 1 Silastic sponge has been removed because of late infection. No cases of extrusion or erosion occurred. Apparently this procedure is safe and effective.
