Quality assessment and control in the intensive care unit

Abstract
This review describes principles of quality control, distinguishing between the following areas: structures, processes, and results. Implementation of these concepts into the practice of intensive care is discussed and recommendations are made. Although structural standards of intensive care units are well established, many interesting developments are taking place in quality control of intensive care unit processes and in outcome research. Unit directors should actively participate in this dynamic evolution.
