EFFECT OF THE GONADOTROPIC SUBSTANCE OF PREGNANT MARE'S SERUM ON THE BLOOD PLASMA-ASCORBIC ACID OF THE CASTRATE BOVINE1

Abstract
The subcut. inj. of 1000 R.U. of gonadotrophic hormone in the castrate bovine was followed by a decrease of venous blood plasma ascorbic acid of 42% within 5 hrs. The inj. of 2000 R.U. of gonadotrophin resulted in a 56% decrease in the same time interval. Recovery of plasma ascorbic acid values to preinjection levels required 44-68 hrs. When blood samples were drawn at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 24, 48 and 72 hrs. following inj., it was found that the maximum decrease occurred during the first 5 hrs. and that return to pre-inj. levels was under way at the end of 9 hrs.
