Abstract
Digestible energy intake, and the kind and amount of activity were determined for seven horses used in equitation courses and nine polo ponies. The polo ponies required 31.6 Meal DE/hr. of activity/kg mass and the equitation horses required 9.3. These values plus estimates of the energy required for standing, walking and trotting reported by other investigators were plotted to derive estimates of energy requirements that may have practical application. Estimates of the energy requirements (kcal of DE/hr./kg mass) above that of maintenance for various activities were extrapolated as follows: Walking 0.5; light (slow trot, some canter), S.I; medium (fast trot, canter, some jumping) 12.5; heavy (gallop, jump) 24.1; strenuous activity 39.0.
