Serum Levels of Methicillin in Premature Infants

Abstract
Methicillin was given intramuscularly in doses of 10 mg/kg to 161 premature infants and of 30 mg/ to 18 children aged over a year. Serum levels in premature infants were higher than in older children. As the age and weight of premature infants increased serum levels fell more rapidly; renal immaturity may be a determining factor. Furthermore methicillin diffused through the blood brain barrier and detectable amounts of the antibiotic were present in the cerebrospinal fluid.
