Abstract
Analytical data are presented for the gum exudates from Prosopis alba, P. glandulosa, P. glandulosa var. glandulosa, P. glandulosa var. torreyana, P. juliflora, P. laevigata and P. velutina, and also for a commercial sample of “gum mesquite”. The feasibility of gum production should be included in the range of attractive attributes of Prosopis spp. when justifying their inclusion in arid zone development programmes. The chemical analysis of Prosopis exudates may yield useful chemotaxonomic information regarding the fine points of difference that arise in this taxonomically difficult genus. Keywords
