Abstract
A systematic procedure for deriving the guiding-center Hamiltonian is described, valid for arbitrary ratio of particle gyro-scale length to perpendicular magnetic scale length. Practial examples are given where the method permits an explicit evaluation of for cases where the small-gyroradius approximation used for standard guiding-center theories is invalid.
