Abstract
The caries-preventive and antibacterial properties of topically applied solutions of iodine and sodium fluoride administered singly or in combination were investigated using the rat model and in vitro studies. The combination of I2-KI and NaF exerted anti-caries effects that were additive for buccal caries and greater than additive for sulcal caries compared with the anticaries effect of the agents used singly. An in vitro ‘checker-board’ assay testing combination effects of I2-KI and NaF on Streptococcus mutans 6715 showed the bactericidal activity of these agents to be additive. These experiments suggest that the l2-KI-NaF combination may have potential as a caries-preventive agent for use in humans.
