Abstract
In the 1870s the archivist, Johan Grundtvig, drew attention to the existence of the Danish census of 1660 and the possibilities it afforded, but he was rebuffed in no uncertain terms by the historians and statisticians of his day, among whom was Professor Will. Scharling, the leading contemporary statistician and the publisher, in collaboration with V. Falbe Hansen, of Danmarks Statistik and it supplement Danmark i 1890, which devoted particular attention to analysing the size and fluctuations of the population at various times.
