Abstract
This chapter is concerned with the long-standing interest and increasing involvement of the European Union (EU) in the relationship between paid work on the one hand and the responsibilities and unpaid work arising from providing care on the other. The Eurospeak shorthand that will appear frequently is ‘the reconciliation of employment and family responsibilities’, and I shall discuss the meaning of this term, comparing it with the term ‘family-friendly’. The chapter considers why the EU has an interest in reconciliation, how it is actively seeking to promote reconciliation, the role of the EU in developing reconciliation in relation to the other parties involved, and the future European agenda.
