Abstract
The effect of progestogens on the testes and semen of the ram was studied by observations on morphology and number of sperm, testicular histology and semen fructose content. Protoplasmic droplets were observed on sperm 3 weeks after initiating treatment to 14 weeks post treatment. Semen volume was significantly lower from the 4th through the 18th week; fructose content in semen was likewise significantly lower than pretreatment values for a similar period. Total sperm output was significantly reduced during weeks 9 through 18, while percentage of abnormal sperm was significantly higher during weeks 4 through 21. Testicular biopsies revealed Leyding cell atrophy and seminiferous tubules with sloughing and disorganization of germinal elements.
