Abstract
While physical illness has long been recognized to have a major psychological impact on the child, it is only recently that systematic attention has been given to the use of psychotherapeutic techniques with medically ill children. This paper reviews the literature in this area from 1970–1977, finding case histories and clinically based suggestions, but little controlled research. It identifies six broad goals for which therapy as described in the literature is undertaken: amelioration of illness-related stress reaction; treatment of broader personality problems arising from illness; preparation of children for medical experiences; helping children cope with impending death; behavior management; and rehabilitation. Directions for future progress are proposed.
