Abstract
Studied 64 male albino sprague-dawley rats in 2 high-drive (85% body weight) and 2 low-drive (98% body weight) groups. Ss were rewarded with 6 or 1 45-mg pellet during 135 trials in a straight alley. In 60 additional trials, 1/2 of each group had the reward shifted to the other value. At acquisition asymptote both main effects were significant, but there was no interaction. The postshift data analyzed in terms of both pre- and postshift controls revealed (a) negative contrast under high but not under low drive, (b) no positive contrast, (c) persistent differential drive effect on downward as contrasted to upward shift, (d) greater performance change under high drive, and (e) a multiplicative drive-reward interaction resulting in no reward effect under low drive and no drive effect under low reward.
