Abstract
Two calcareous aquifers occur in faulted structures of Cretaceous Age, the Garraf Range and Gaya Block, 30 km south west of Barcelona. Groundwater flow is strongly influenced by karstic solution of the rocks, which reached a more advanced stage of development on the lower aquifer of the Garraf Range and led to an almost direct hydraulic connection between sinkholes and large submarine springs. Flow directions in the upper aquifer are also strongly conditioned by karstic solution, but here the karst is less developed and practically unconnected with the karst system in the lower aquifer. Stable isotopes, deuterium and oxygen 18 were used in order to determine the direction of travel of seepage losses from a surface reservoir. Keywords
