A colony of Microcodium is present in a layer of Berriasian calcareous rock to the south of the Alpilles chain in eastern Provence, France. The cavernicole nature of these organisms indicates that they are heterotrophic. If this is so then their appearance in a karst regime can not be justified. It is suggested, therefore, they should be assigned to the animal kingdom.
