Abstract
A molecular theory of two-dimensional liquid crystals is developed. Taking short-range correlations explicitly into account, we show that in addition to isotropic and nematic phases, solutions representing smectic and crystalline phases can also be constructed as the number density increases beyond certain critical values. Relevant order parameters defined in a canonical ensemble are obtained as functions of density at fixed temperature. Keywords
