Optimisation in Coronary Angiography and Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty

Abstract
ICRP 60 and 73 recommend the establishment of reference dose levels as part of the optimisation process in diagnostic radiology. In Italy, the recent implementation into national regulations of EC Directive 466/84 is persuading professional associations to develop strategies for the optimisation and harmonisation of the practice. In interventional cardiology (IC) radiation exposure of patient, cardiologist and staff may become quite significant due to the large number of frames and long fluoroscopy time required. With the purpose of harmonising and optimising radiological practice a study group of the Italian Group for Haemodynamic Studies (GISE) was set up in 1996. The group has collected information on practice, technical and clinical parameters of procedures, and doses to patients and staff have been measured in a sample of Italian cardiological centres. Provisional quality criteria for angiographic images and appropriate reference doses for patient and staff for the most common procedures have been proposed.
