Abstract
It is shown that a single-mode optical fibre can be characterised by only three moments of its refractive index profile function. Exact shapes of the profile are not required. An analytically derived formula provides highly accurate values for the modal eigenvalue and all quantities used for calculating pulse dispersion. Examples for theoretically and experimentally defined profiles are presented. Keywords
