The attenuation of longitudinal ultrasound in smectic- liquid crystals departs markedly from the quadratic frequency dependence predicted by hydrodynamics. The experimental results are compared to recent theoretical predictions of the breakdown of conventional hydrodynamics in smectic- liquid crystals and other "one-dimensional crystals."
