Abstract
The entropy of formation of a Schottky defect, Ss, is known in some ionic solids with an accuracy of 10 %. The entropy of fusion, Sf, is also known within 10 %. One observes the empirical relation Ss = 3.2 Sf within 20 %. In a very simplified procedure, the vibration modes affected by the presence of the vacancy are identified to those in the liquid state. This leads in a first approximation to the relation Ss = 4 SfKeywords
