Protective Effect of Small Lead Shields During Repeated Whole-Body X-Ray Irradiation of Rats

Abstract
Pb shielding of various parts of the body of white female Wistar rats by placing Pb pieces over the body section to be protected and amounting to 15% of the exposed surface, resulted in increased survival rates in all instances whether the tail or the liver was shielded. The radiation dose 600 r/air (factors 200 KV, 25 ma, 0.5 mm. Cu and 1.0 mm. Al filter, HVL 1.1 mm. Cu) was approx. the 50/30 days LD. Repetition of this dose 34 days after the 1st exposure did not result in any significant decrease in survival rates. Detailed hematological studies revealed a quick drop of the white cell count within 24 hrs. after the 1st exposure and remaining low for 10 days, when the count starred to recover. After the 2d exposure normal counts were not reached even after 30 days.Keywords
