Abstract
Lichen fungi were isolated and held under different conditions in pure culture. A specific lichen substance could not be found in any of these cultures. The fungus mycelium formed only simple phenol compounds, among them orsellinic and hematomic acids, which did not develop in corresponding lichens. The kind and distribution of phenols found yielded suggestions concerning the way and possible role of the alga in the biosynthesis of lichen depsides and depsidones.
