Iodine Concentration and Content in the Organs of Rat during Postnatal Development

Abstract
It was found that the thyroid attains its maximum relative weight during the first three weeks of postnatal life. The concentration of thyroidal iodine declines during the 3rd week; the highest value was found in the 7th week of life. Serum protein-bound iodine (PBI) and the majority of tissues showed the highest iodine concentration at 17 days of life, the muscle at 3 days, and the alimentary tract at 8 days. Beside the thyroid, the highest concentration was found in the stomach (635 ng I/g, 8th day) and the pelt (369 ng I/g, 23rd day) The serum contained 49 ng PBI/ml (17th day).
