Abstract
Most correlational methods tend to capitalize on chance. This capitalization tends to be especially serious when factor analytic methods are employed. The study compares alpha and invariance coefficients, which are used, respectively, as estimates of generalizability of results to a universe of items and as estimates of the generalizability of results to a population of persons. A secondary analysis of three previous factor analytic studies provides an heuristic demonstration that the coefficients are sensitive to different data characteristics. It is suggested that research results might be generalized more accurately if researchers calculated invariance coefficients, in addition to alpha coefficients, when correlational methods are employed. Keywords
