Abstract
Differences between the problems and purposes of evaluating teaching in professional education and in general education are discussed. Six particularly relevant features of such evaluations are identified. They are: self‐evaluation, flexibility, substance, pluralism, student behavior as an index of teacher performance, and the concept of communities of minds. These features are discussed in the context of the overriding ethos of professionalism.Keywords
