Transphenoidal Microsurgery for Acromegaly

Abstract
Twelve patients with active acromegaly were treated by sublabial, transphenoidal microsurgery. The goal was to remove the tumor, lower growth hormone to a normal level, and preserve normal pituitary function. Early results demonstrate that this is usually possible in patients who have not been operated upon previously. In patients with a history of previous surgery, total sella clean-out may be required to cure the acromegalic state. Long term follow-up is needed.
