On the Relative Dominance of Shrubs in Okefenokee Swamp

Abstract
Composition, biomass and productivity of the shrub stratum is discussed. The shrub stratum has higher biomass and productivity (biomass 330 g/m2 including only shrub species and net primary productivity 106 g/m2 .cntdot. yr) than reported for forest communities of the northeastern USA. Fire, high light availability and a long growing season are probably important factors in promoting high productivity. The most common shrub species are Itea virginica, Lyonia lucida, Leucothoe racemosa and Clethra alnifolia.
