Psychological Aspects in the Treatment of Leukemia Patients in the Isolated-Bed System ‘Life Island’

Abstract
Report of psychological assessment and supportive psychotherapy in the treatment (intensive chemotherapy under gnotobiotic conditions) of nine patients suffering from acute leukemia. Isolation, extreme dependency on medical and nursing staff, inhibition of motor activity and medical complications aggravate the reaction to the confrontation with the diagnosis. The impact of the specific treatment situation does not only concern the patients but medical and nursing staff as well. Arising problems and means of dealing with them are discussed.
