Abstract
The kinetics of the ethylene reduction of rhodium(III) trichloride to a rhodium(I) ethylene complex in dimethylacetamide solution have been examined over a range of temperatures and of concentrations of rhodium(III), ethylene, hydrogen ion, and chloride ion. The results suggest that the reaction proceeds through an initial dissociation of a chloro rhodium(III) species. A resulting intermediate rhodium(III) ethylene complex decomposes to rhodium(I) which is stabilized by rapid reaction with further ethylene as an olefin complex.
