Abstract
DISSCUSSIONS of the relation between position and respiratory symptoms in congestive heart failure are usually centered about the symptom of orthopnea. The purpose of the present report is to describe the effect of position on another manifestation — that is, periodic breathing.Material and MethodsFifteen experiments were carried out on patients with chronic cardiac decompensation. Their ages ranged from thirty-four to seventy-three years; all but 1 were men. The etiologic diagnosis was rheumatic or arteriosclerotic heart disease.Patients were unselected, except that they were not included if unable to tolerate flat or almost flat positions for at least six . . .Keywords
