Abstract
In aerated 5-gallon bottles yields of 39 g. of 2,3-butylene glycol per 100 g. of glucose added were obtained with A. aero-genes 199, on a 10% glucose-urea-salts medium. By continuous addition of a sugar concentrate a glycol conc. of 9.8% was produced in the fermented medium. Wheat mashes hydrolyzed with HCl in a hydrolyzer provided with a 1,150-rpm. stirrer could be fermented to give 28 g. of glycol from 100 g. of dry grain. With an acid conc. of 0.19 N, optimum conditions for producing a fermentable mash were found to be between 40 and 70 pounds'' steam pressure per square inch and 18 and 8 min., respectively. Keywords
